Adhesive fixed external wall insulation system (45)

External wall insulation (EWI) can be installed over most forms of construction, including framed structures. Where an adhesive system is used, the surfaces must be sound, free from loose material, and clean. Where additional mechanical fixings are used, the condition of the building fabric is not critical provided the substrate into which the fasteners are anchored is capable of sustaining the design loads. Some manufacturers recommend that internal wet work should be substantially complete and dry before commencing installation. Generally, EWI systems do not have height restrictions, except where they are to be used within 1 m of a boundary or are over 18 m high and have not been passed in accordance with BS 8414-1 for adhesive systems fixed to masonry walls. In Scotland, systems are required to be non-combustible throughout.
