Calcium sulfate based self smoothing screed materials are usually supplied ready-mixed. However, bagged preblended materials are also available for site mixing. This type of screed is typically cast on to new or existing structural floors to form smooth and regular substrates for applied finishes. This type of screed material cannot be used as a wearing screed. The screeds use either a synthetic anhydrite or hemihydrate form of calcium sulfate as the binder. The negligible drying shrinkage of calcium sulfate based screeds means that bonding to the substrate (and the preparation this entails) is unnecessary. Their stability under changes of temperature make them particularly suitable for use with underfloor heating.
